First Film to Arrive in Theatres November 18, 2011

Los Angeles, CA, June 10, 2010 – Summit Entertainment confirmed today that THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN will be released as two separate films with the first of the two slated to be released in theatres on November 18, 2011. Academy Award® winner Bill Condon will direct both films starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner along with Billy Burke as Charlie Swan as well as returning members of the Cullen Family including Peter Facinelli as Carlisle, Elizabeth Reaser as Esme, Jackson Rathbone as Jasper, Nikki Reed as Rosalie, Ashley Greene as Alice and Kellan Lutz as Emmett.

David Slade's Note to the Fans

Dear fans of The Twilight Saga,

I want to congratulate you for reaching over 6 million fans on The Twilight Saga Facebook page.

It's hard to fathom that it was just over one year ago that I started constructing this third and epic adventure which takes place in the town of Forks.

I want to share a story about one of our days of shooting with you.

It was a Friday night and the rain was relentless. We were at La Push to shoot the tribe's histories, a great speech by Billy Black. We had Taylor and Kristen and the whole wolf pack around a campfire as the heavens let loose on us.

Gil Birmingham was in fine form as the rain hammered down on us all, we adjusted our lights so that the rain vanished into the black of night.

We constructed a tent over the scene to keep everyone dry as we worked, every 15 minutes or so we would have to tip it to stop the collecting rain from splitting the fabric.

For some reason still unknown, around 3am, the wolf pack stood exactly in the way of several gallons of rainwater as it was being cleared. Being the wolf pack, they just laughed it off as they stood there soaked to the bone.

We worked through the mud and the rain all night, until we had the scene perfected.

As we left, dawn was now cracking and in the dim light I passed a small army of fans who had braved the weather for the entire night, still standing there, holding drenched flowers and waiting to get a glimpse of our actors.

So, to those of you who stood behind our security, who waited in line at theatres overnight, to those of you who just love these stories, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is a love letter to you.

Each day I felt the weight of your favourite scenes, your favourite lines, your dreams and your imagination.

It has been an unforgettable journey, and now as I finalise the last prints to ready the film for your local theaters, I cannot wait for you to see it.

Cast keeps 'Twilight' machine rolling

CHICAGO — Dashingly disheveled Robert Pattinson has an infectious, high-pitched laugh that would never do for his seductive vampire lover-boy, Edward Cullen.

Buff-and-polished Taylor Lautner is pocket-size compared with the looming stature of his werewolf counterpart, Jacob Black.

Casual yet cool Kristen Stewart can be a real chatterbox, unlike her moody Bella Swan, the high schooler in a romantic tug of war between these two supernatural objects of teen desire.

Lucky girl, right? "Yeah, but that's in the movies," Stewart says about bringing to life the modern-day Gothic heroine from the insanely popular Twilight book series (85 million copies sold so far). "I'm just the ultimate fan. If you read a story and you like it andconnect to it, it probably means you've inserted yourself in the story, and I get to do that on the most glorified level possible."

Hollywood fantasy regularly blends with everyday reality for these three blazing-hot rising stars. It has taken a while for a cultural navigator like Oprah Winfrey to zero in on the heat behind the literary-spawned phenom. But on this early May morning, Twilight fever is raging at Harpo Studios as the actors file into the backstage area after taping a show that aired Thursday. The occasion? Eclipse, the third chapter in an already billion-dollar worldwide franchise that arrives June 30.

The actors are unfazed by the shrieking adoration of a largely female audience, many in black Twilight T's — Team Edward and Team Jacob are duly represented — and all handpicked for their passion for the epic movie series based on author Stephenie Meyer's four-part saga.

"It's so nice sometimes, preaching to the converted," says Pattinson, 24, the London-born overnight sex symbol and primary reason for the screams. Thanks to his devoted worshipers, he has been elevated from a little-known Harry Potter supporting player to one of Time's 100 most influential people in the world in less than three years. They were out in force the night before at a Winfrey-sponsored screening of an unfinished print of Eclipse. Afterward, a firestorm of fan Tweets rife with "OMGs" gushed about the much-anticipated sequel to 2008's Twilight and last year's New Moon.

Once Stewart, 20, painstakingly signs Winfrey's guest book and Lautner, 18, stops practicing his grape-tossing parlor trick, the castmates settle into a buttery leather sofa to talk about such topics as the iconic moments that are re-created in Eclipse, run-ins with other celebrities and what the post-Twilight future holds.

The fame game

But, first, the pain of fame that comes from being on the paparazzi's most-wanted list is addressed. When New Moon opened last fall, barely a day went by without seeing a headline about Lautner and country cutie Taylor Swift or speculation on whether Pattison and Stewart are a real-life couple.

Although, lately, the frenzy has calmed somewhat, judging by the number of Twilight-free magazine covers at grocery checkouts. "I don't know if this is the actual reason why, but we have gotten better at hiding over the last year," Pattinson says.

"That's totally the reason," Stewart concurs. "They just make up a story to go along with the pictures. If they never get the picture, there's no story. We are just good hiders now."

Such subterfuge includes neither confirming nor denying that they are in a relationship. Yet there clearly is some sort of special connection between the two, what with their playful teasing and personal asides. Let's just say it wasn't Lautner who placed a hand on Pattinson's leg during a portion of the interview.

But all three take their Twilight-related duties to heart, whatever they might require. Stewart even leaps up in a panic at one point, fearing she misspelled a word in her salutation to Winfrey. She checks the book: "Believe — ie or ei?"

"I before e except after c," Pattinson responds. She checks. "Oh, yeah," she says with a triumphant fist pump.

Pattinson laughs. "I almost spelled Oprah wrong. I almost wrote Opera."

The actors are keen to know how Eclipse played to the crowd at the screening and are pleased to hear that every element has been heightened: the horror, the romance, the three-way interaction among their characters, the touches of humor that often come at the expense of Edward and Jacob's rivalry — especially after they forge a testy alliance to save Bella from a roving gang of rabid newborn vampires.

Stewart says of Eclipse's positive early reception: "It is a well-oiled machine at this point. We have had a lot of time to establish what this thing is about and a lot of time to consider it. And they gave us so much more money this time. So that is exciting."

Pattinson, looking bemused, quickly clarifies her statement. "For the film. The budget."

Stewart is chagrined. "Oh, my God. No, no. That didn't even occur to me. They gave us so much more money to make the film look good!"

The leads did get raises — Stewart and Pattinson are taking home a reported $7.5 million each plus a percentage of the gross, Lautner gets $5 million — while the production's price tag grew to $65 million, still modest compared with similar franchises.

Yet the few extra bucks seem to have paid off, especially with the effects. Even Lautner's CG wolf alter-ego is more adorable than in New Moon. "Yeah," says the actor, sheepishly. "It was very cuddly. I don't know if that's what we were aiming for."

He waffles over the wisdom of sharing an anecdote about the scene in which the vicious horse-sized beast sweetly nuzzles Bella and she scratches his ear. After a little coaxing, he relents.

"That day I came on set and put on this tight gray spandex suit ..."

"There is dialogue and I talk to him," Stewart explains. "I said, 'How am I going to do this without Taylor?' " So instead of the actress pretending that a massive computer-animated wolf was nearby, Lautner volunteered to be its stand-in.

"Basically, it looked like a Teletubby," he continues about his outfit. "I had this circle on the face but everything else was covered. It was weird. But, yeah, I stood there and would literally bend over ..."

"I would actually pet his head," Stewart adds.

Pattinson, meanwhile, struggled with Edward's rather formal proposal to Bella, which reflects the fact that although his vintage vampire looks 17, he hails from the turn of the last century.

"I was dreading the day it was coming," he says of the scene that was held until the very end of the shoot. "The first time I read the script, I thought, 'This is impossible.' " References to "promenades" and sharing "iced tea on the porch" as Edward explains how he would have courted Bella in the old days especially stuck in his throat. "It's so earnest. I finally convinced the producers that you can play it with a bit of awareness of not being a fictional character. I'm not trying to be part of a Gothic novel."

When Pattinson finally watched it, however, he was pleasantly surprised. "It seems different when you see it."

Their profiles have grown with each film, and celebrity status does afford them the chance to mingle with their own idols. Although, more often than not, the other stars are the ones bedazzled as they request autographs for their Twilight-crazed kids.

"I took a picture with Ron Howard last year at the Oscars," Pattinson recalls. "I thought it was the funniest thing. I asked, 'Is it for your kids?' He said, 'No, it's for me. I want to have it on my phone.' " Making the situation even odder: Howard's daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, is in Eclipse.

Alas, Pattinson has yet to run into his favorite, Jack Nicholson.

Stewart pipes up: "I have."

Pattinson: "What? When did you meet?"

Stewart: "At a screening for Into the Wild," her 2007 coming-of-age drama directed by Sean Penn. "He was exactly like you think he would be."

Pattinson, sounding peeved: "You never told me that."

Lautner joins in. "I didn't meet him but I sat next to him at a Lakers game."

Pattinson, utterly exasperated: "What?"

Life beyond 'Twilight'

Next subject. The three are actively trying to ward off post-Twilight typecasting by doing solo projects in between. Stewart and Pattinson, both bookworms and drawn to art-house fare, earned OK reviews but underwhelming ticket sales for their two recent releases, the girl-band bio The Runaways and the romantic melodrama Remember Me.

But they continue to be in demand for more mature roles. Stewart is psyched to be a part of a big-screen version of Jack Kerouac's On the Road, which starts shooting in August. Pattinson recently wrapped his work on the London set of Bel Ami as a 19th-century social-climbing rogue opposite Kristin Scott Thomas, Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci. Does he bed all three?

"Yes, but they're not like typical love scenes at all," he says.

Adds Stewart: "They're all a little weird. A little edgy. And a little nude." Chuckling ensues.

Meanwhile, Lautner — a natural athlete who played a high school track star in the box-office-topping ensemble comedy Valentine's Day— seems to be angling to become the next big action hero with upcoming roles in the thriller Abduction and Stretch Armstrong, a 3-D adventure based on a toybox muscleman

Did he ever own one of the dolls, whose limbs could be pulled and elongated like taffy? "I don't remember having one at my house, but I totally remember stretching that sucker."

Then there is the next Twilight feature, Breaking Dawn, opening Nov. 18 next year. The fourth and presumably final book is so jammed with life-altering events — a wedding, first-time sex between Bella and Edward, a grotesquely painful birth — that there has been talk of doing two films back to back. And it might even be in 3-D. But the actors can confirm only their involvement.

What has been decided is that Breaking Dawn's director will be Bill Condon, the filmmaker behind Dreamgirlsand Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Chicago.

Have they met Condon, who already posted a letter on Facebook reassuring fans of his appreciation of the material and that the film most definitely will not be a musical despite his résumé?

Lautner nods yes.

Pattinson: "When did you meet him?" Lautner: "One day." Stewart: "Did you have a meeting?" Lautner: "No, no." Pattinson: "I literally met him three nights ago."

Stewart, in a mock snit: "Well, he obviously doesn't want to meet me."

A Fan’s Experience at the Oprah Eclipse Screening

When I got the call saying that I was invited to Oprah’s Eclipse taping, I thought I would die of happiness. It couldn’t get better that that, right? Oh, how wrong I was.

Two words: ECLIPSE. SCREENING.

That’s right. A handful of very, very lucky Twilighters were treated to the early cut of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse on May 4, 2010.

My best friend and I arrived in Chicago on Tuesday morning. She flew in from Texas, while I came in from North Carolina. When she emerged from the jetway, we immediately began the Twilight geek fest. We kept our eyes peeled for any Twi-sightings in O’Hare, but alas, there were none.

Time seemed to crawl after we got to our hotel, but soon enough it was time to hail a cab and head to the theatre.

After receiving wristbands and having our phones and cameras held by security, we were ushered into the theatre. Remember how it sounded at the midnight release of New Moon (you know you were there…), and how the whole room was practically buzzing with excitement? Imagine that times about a hundred.

There were two women sitting to my left who were talking about the Saga. When I heard one say that she’d heard that Bella doesn’t ever become a vampire, I had to lean over and ask…”Have you not read the books?” One of them looked at me and said, “No, have you read them?”. The only response I could come up with through my shock was “Ummm, yes.” They then told me that they’d only watched New Moon on the plane, thinking that it was the first movie of the series.

Maybe my next move was a little rude, but knowing that there were literally thousands of people who would have killed to be in that theatre at that moment, I called them out. “So what exactly are you doing here?” Apparently, they’d gotten taping tickets before the date was designated to be a Twilight show. So for all of you who didn’t get to go, I stood up for you. Twilighters stand together, you know?

One of Oprah’s people came out and announced that this would not be the cut that we’d see in theatres, that there was some sound work and CGI left to be done. I don’t think anyone minded in the least. After all, no one but us will ever see that version of Eclipse.

When the lights went down, the screaming began. There was a false start without any sound, but they backed it up and started again. This time, it was perfect.

So how was it? Well, I won’t divulge any spoilers, but overall people were incredibly happy with it. The fight scenes were amazing, the scenes with the Cullens were amazing…and oh my, did Jackson Rathbone bring it in Jasper’s scenes. Seriously, if you weren’t already Team Jasper, you will be very soon. I think that all of the big things that people want to see will be covered, so no worries there.

I can’t wait to be in the theatre again on June 30th so I can see the evolution of Eclipse, and I look forward to discussing it on TwilightersAnonymous.com. Lady Gaga has confirmed her appearance on Muse's newest addition to the Twilight soundtrack, 'Neutron Star Collision'. In an interview, Gaga mentioned that the project was "exciting, and was a big challenge to work with a band such as Muse."

'Eclipse' bites into L.A. Film Festival

Next month, the Los Angeles Film Festival will likely welcome a new contingent: throngs of screaming girls.

The annual event, which announced its lineup on Tuesday, will feature the world-premiere screening of "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," the long-awaited third installment in the popular vampire franchise. It's not exactly typical film festival fare, but organizers are hoping it will serve a larger purpose.

"If we program a movie like 'Twilight' that draws audiences that might not otherwise attend film festivals, hopefully we'll expose them to other cinematic experiences that we think are inspiring," said festival director Rebecca Yeldham.

Still, fans eager to see "Eclipse" before it hits theaters in July will have to pay for the privilege. Only those festivalgoers who purchase one of the festival's top-level passes — which range in cost from $500 to $1,000 — will get inside the Nokia Theatre on June 24.

In stark contrast to the new "Twilight" will be the festival's opening-night movie, the Focus Films dramedy "The Kids Are All Right," about an L.A.-based lesbian couple (played by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) whose two teenage kids decide to track down their sperm-donor dad. The festival, which runs June 17 to June 27, will close with Universal's 3-D animated film "Despicable Me."

Similar to past years, the festival will offer a mix of both big-budget studio crowd-pleasers and smaller independent films. The Los Angeles Times-sponsored event will feature more than 200 films, music videos and shorts from 40 countries (including 28 world, North American and U.S. premieres). This year, the event will move from its old stomping grounds in Westwood to downtown L.A., where many screenings will take place at L.A. Live.

Former Newsweek film critic David Ansen joined the festival this year as its artistic director, helping to put together the program from more than 4,700 submissions. "His taste is very broad," Yeldham said. "As much as he appreciates the high art, he also is a great aficionado of popular cinema."

Accordingly, this year's festival will host a number of gala screenings, which include Sony Pictures Classics' "Animal Kingdom"; Fox Searchlight's "Cyrus," starring Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly; "Mahler on the Couch"; and "Revolución," a series of short films by the likes of Gael García Bernal and Rodrigo García.

Last year, the festival hosted only 12 premieres, a number that has now more than doubled. "I think perhaps people are beginning to realize that the L.A. Film Festival is a great place to launch their films," Ansen said.

The change in venue is also meant to broaden local filmgoers' horizons.

"The vibe is going to change because there's a very different spirit and energy around downtown," he said. "There was certainly some grumbling on the blogs about parking and traffic — Westsiders do have a funny provincialism about downtown. But there's such an artists community and all these great new restaurants that I think it's going to feel more like an event. Hopefully, we're going to reach some new audiences."

The documentaries in competition will likely appeal to a broad audience as they cover a wide range of subject matter, including a film about a family that owns a traveling circus ("Circo"), one about the first round-the-world Zeppelin flight ("Farewell") and another detailing the journey of six aspiring magicians competing in Las Vegas' World Magic Seminar ("Make Believe").

Budding filmmakers will also compete in the narrative competition, which will feature much international fare, including "Dog Sweat" by Iranian filmmaker Hossein Keshavarz, "A Family" by Denmark's Pernille Fischer Christensen, and the Japanese film "Parade" by Isao Yukisada.

Also giving the festival an international flavor will be the sophomore installment of selections from the Ambulante Film Festival, a traveling event that promotes documentary filmmaking in Mexico.

In addition, the festival will introduce L.A. audiences to films that have already found fans on the festival circuit, including such Sundance standouts as Lisa Cholodenko's "The Kids Are All Right," "Cane Toads: The Conquest" and Davis Guggenheim's "Waiting for Superman."

Passes go on sale to the general public on Monday; tickets for individual films on June 10.

Greetings Twihards, Twifans, Twilight Moms, Team Edward, Team Jacob and Team Switzerland,

I just want to say hello to all of you and let you know that I'm stoked to be getting underway on the adventure of making BREAKING DAWN. As you've probably heard, I've been given a very warm welcome by Stephenie and Team Summit - who are super-focused, as you know, on getting these movies right.

I'm pretty busy bringing myself up to speed on what you already know by heart: I've read BREAKING DAWN twice, rewatched Catherine's and Chris's movies 2-3 times each, have all four CDs playing in my car, and have Catherine's notebook, Mark Cotta Vaz's companion books, and even Volume 1 of the graphic novel here on my desk - a corner of my office is starting to look like Hot Topic. I realize that this barely qualifies me for "newborn" status in the universe you've been living inside for a few years now, but a guy's gotta start somewhere.

Like many of you, I've always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series DARK SHADOWS, which I followed avidly as a kid. But that alone hadn't been enough to get me interested in making a vampire movie, even though my early screenwriting and directing efforts grew out of a great love for horror movies and thrillers. Since making GODS AND MONSTERS thirteen years ago, however, I've been yearning for a return to a story with Gothic overtones.

The wonderful world that Stephenie has created has obviously struck a chord with you, and I don't think it's difficult to see why. For me, her characters are simultaneously timeless, yet very modern. Rooted in a beautiful, real landscape with a great sense of place, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the Forks/La Push menagerie, experience emotions that are primal, and universal: desire, despair, jealousy - and it all comes to fruition in BREAKING DAWN. This is a final chapter in the best sense; not just wide in scope and scale, but emotionally charged and intense throughout.

I'm a huge admirer of the already-iconic Kristen, Robert, and Taylor, and wanted to be the one to work with them as they face the challenges of bringing your beloved characters to the end of their journeys. Really, what could be more fun than that?

Please feel free to ask questions in the comments section below, and I'll do my best to answer them. I hope that this will be the first of many occasions I'll get to check in with you as we set to work bringing BREAKING DAWN to the screen. I am excited and grateful to have all of you alongside me for my TWILIGHT journey.

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ is a bloodbath for the Cullens

They must battle an army of new vampires controlled by Victoria and this time you’ll get to see their ‘true vampire-ness,’ according to actor Peter Facinelli.

The family that slays together, stays together.

At least that's the case for the Cullen brood.

In "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," which hits theaters June 30, Seattle is ravaged by a series of killings caused by an army of newborn vampires controlled by revenge-seeking bloodsucker Victoria. To combat the threat against Bella ( Kristen Stewart) in this third installment of the franchise, the Cullens must band together and join forces with their sworn enemies, the wolf pack.

"The whole family is in a vulnerable position because of the love we have for Bella," said Elizabeth Reaser, who plays matriarch Esme Cullen. "If she's not OK, we're not OK."

In the past, we've seen the clan hit baseballs so hard that they can play only in a thunder storm, to block out the sound. And we've watched the buttoned-up human imposters welcome Bella into their home as the human girlfriend of one of their own — the handsome Edward.

"This time around, you get to see their true vampire-ness," said Peter Facinelli, who plays head vampire Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the series based on the bestselling books by Stephenie Meyer.

What can we expect from the pale-faced Cullen family (which includes the Hale siblings) this go around? Here's what the actors say audiences can expect from the story and their characters:

Facinelli: "For me, as Carlisle, it's an exciting portion of the series. Carlisle is very compassionate and he has a lot of killing to do in this movie. I joke, after he kills the bad guys, he says he's sorry in his head. And, you know, he's calm and level-headed. He's the rock of the family. He usually has a lot of information to draw from because Alice can see into the future and Edward can read minds. In this third movie, he's not getting that information. Neither one of his sources are working, so he's kind of flying blind."

Reaser: "Esme is still a vampire. She still wants to kill people all day long. It was interesting to get in touch with the vampire side of her in ways that haven't really been explored. Her family is in danger and that brings out the mama bear in her.

Ashley Greene (as Alice Cullen): "Yeah, she's delicate and prissy at times, but Alice gets a little edgier with each installment. And with these vampires messing with her family and the people she loves, you're going to see a bit of her toughness. It's a reminder to the audience that even though we restrain ourselves at times, we're still vampires and we're dangerous. You're going to see the dark, dangerous side of Alice."

Kellan Lutz (as Emmett Cullen): "You're going to see a smile on Emmett's face from start to finish. He just loves to fight. And there's a lot of fighting. He sort of plays bigger in this one than the others."

Jackson Rathbone (as Jasper Hale): "You'll get to see a little bit of the root of what makes Jasper so withdrawn and quiet in the Cullen family. Fans will get some of Jasper's back story in ‘Eclipse.' I got to wear the whole Civil War gear and everything. There's a bit of the softer and darker side of Jasper in this film."

Nikki Reed (as Rosalie Hale): "You see a reason for her attitude. I think fans will feel for her. There was a bit of that in ‘New Moon.' Fans got to see a bit of her sensitive side. Her sane side. Her logical side. And her desire to help her family. This time around, she is much more of a participant. She's a survivor. This is her family. So if protecting Bella means protecting her family, she's going to do it."

Robert Pattinson (as Edward Cullen): Snagging a phone interview with the brooding dreamboat — who was overseas shooting his latest film, "Bel Ami" — proved difficult. So what can we expect from the lovesick Edward? He promises to love Bella "every moment of forever," as the trailer reveals. He's still hesitant about her becoming a vampire. He's determined to protect her from Victoria. And he's vying with Jacob for her affections. Oh, the life of an antique teenage vampire.

I have to be careful about what I write here because it will be tweeted the moment TIME hits the stands. And if I say something bad about Rob Pattinson, I'm dead meat. That's the devotion the Twilight films inspire. It's certainly not how he planned it. And though I am continually impressed by the aplomb with which he handles the hysteria, I occasionally think he would take it all back if given the chance. Because essentially, Rob, 23, is a reserved, bookish sort of specimen, a guy who'd rather spend the night at the corner table in the pub with friends — a bit of a weirdo, frankly, in the best sense.
So how to write about someone who seems to answer Freud's rhetorical question, What do women want? Perhaps it's just worth pointing out that it'd be fun to have a beer with him even if he weren't Edward Cullen. That we haven't seen a tenth of what he can do onscreen. And that important things, beyond the veil of Hollywood, occupy his time too — music, conversation, ideas, a sense of the absurd. Which, maybe, explains why he never gets to my e-mails. I love you, Rob! Call me!

Attention "Twilight" lovers: If you've memorized every note of the "New Moon" soundtrack, you're in luck: On June 8, you'll be able to get your hands on the next soundtrack in the series, "Eclipse."

The release date was first posted Monday (April 19) morning on Amazon.com, and subsequently confirmed to MTV News by a spokesperson for Atlantic Records, which will be releasing the soundtrack in conjunction with music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas' Chop Shop Records.

No official announcement has been made about just who will be appearing on the soundtrack to "Eclipse" (the film itself hits theaters on June 30), but some reports on "Twilight" fansites have already penciled author Stephenie Meyer-faves Muse onto the album, which makes sense because they've already appeared on the first two editions of the "Twlight" soundtracks.

The spokesperson for Atlantic would not confirm any of the artists scheduled to appear, but said a press release on the soundtrack is forthcoming.

The "Eclipse" soundtrack definitely has some big shoes to fill. The 2008 soundtrack to "Twilight" featured a pair of new songs from Paramore, plus tunes from Linkin Park, Perry Farrell, and star Robert Pattinson, and was a massive success, debuting at #1 on the Billboard albums chart and selling more than 2 million copies. The follow-up, "New Moon," went in a more indie-rock direction, featuring songs from the likes of Death Cab For Cutie, the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Lykke Li, but was also a success, having been certified platinum.

Exclusive: Summit looking at Academy Award-nominated directors for 'Breaking Dawn'

Yes, it’s still early days, but Summit is trying to up its pedigree for its big-screen adaptation of the final installment of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. Sources tell EW that the studio has reached out to at least three top-notch directors, including Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation), Gus Van Sant (Milk), and Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) to gauge their interest in what is likely to be two movies. (Van Sant’s reps confirmed that he’s been approached, but Coppola and Condon’s people didn’t return phone calls by press time. Summit declined to comment.)

No decisions are likely to be made until the studio delivers screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg’s detailed outline to the directors. That should happen sometime next week. Until then we can just wonder how these three very diverse directors will approach Bella’s controversial birthing scene.

No longer Twilight's Muse: after contributing songs to the first two Twilight soundtracks, British rock band Muse won't be on the soundtrack to Eclipse.

muse is my favorite band of all time. period. as much as it pains me that they arent going to be in the eclipse soundtrack, a part of me is also ecstatic. the last muse show i went to was full of twimoms that didnt understand what it meant to be at the front of the pit at a rock show. people are going to push. it's going to get hot. you will be jumped on. it was inevitable that they would become a huge band, so this might be the best possible result; a non-soundtrack new song!

For the original Twilight soundtrack, Muse contributed the bombastic "Supermassive Black Hole." For the indie-heavy New Moon compilation, they offered the whimsical glam-rocker "I Belong to You." Considering their track record, the band was already dishing on their new tune for Eclipse mere days after New Moon gave the world's teens a hormonal imbalance.

But now that that flick's headed to DVD and we're onto Eclipse's proper promo cycle, we caught up with the band's Dominic Howard to ask him how Muse is coming along with their latest song-to-play-vampire-baseball-by.

"Nah, it's gone," Howard tells us -- just a few months after he quipped to MTV: "We might even do something for the third one. How about that for a scoop?"

The news is surprising given the band is pals-y with Eclipse's director, David Slade (he helmed loads of Muse's early videos), and possibly pals-ier with Stephenie Meyer (there's even a photo of lead singer Matthew Bellamy cozying up to Twilight's dark-ish mistress on Muse's official site).

"Oh, it’s nothing to do with Stephenie, she’s totally cool," says Howard, beginning to explain how Muse have potentially broken their Twilight hat-trick. "It’s the people in the movie business, completely outside of the writers and the creative types, the non-creative types I suppose are the people who are quite hard to deal with in Hollywood, so it didn’t work out."

As for the original tune in question, which remains untitled, Howard says it would have fit Eclipse like Edward on Bella -- even though it wasn't directly inspired by the books or movies.

"It was a love song, so it’s a personal song, and it wasn’t really to do with the films. But it was sounding good," he says.

Muse still plans to release it, says Howard, even if you won't hear it on the Eclipse soundtrack. (Maybe you can just play it over the make-out scenes once the flick hits DVD.)

"Yeah, yeah, we sure will [release it]. I mean, it was great. We worked on it in Australia, we were ready to record, we were going to do some recording with Butch Vig, so we might still do it," he says. "I’m sure the song will definitely come to life for real at some point, but I think for this film it’s not going to happen."

The Lost Boy
In which Robert Pattinson anguishes over his great luck, laments the passing of ’80s porn, dreams of being groped by a lady elephant – again – and leaves us to wonder how an intensely earnest 23-year-old who’s unable to find his way around his hometown can possibly navigate the maze of megastardom

COFFEE
It’s the unseasonably cold November of 2008 when I go to New York’s Bowery Hotel. There’s a young man sitting in the garden, wrapped in about nine black sweaters and wearing a wool hat, smoking cigarettes, sipping a latte the size of his head, and furiously making notes on a script in the bitter cold. I have read about teenage girls lighting themselves on fire in front of his hotel, but at the moment Robert Pattinson is warming his hands on a coffee cup.
Hello, I’m Jenny. I think I’m here so yon can check me out.
„Okay. I’m Rob. Urn … would you like some fries? With gravy?“
Allen Coulter, the director of Hollywoodland and a creative force behind The Sopranos, has sent me. He was thinking about doing this movie—it wasn’t quite there yet, but I should „come meet Rob.“
Rob. When he came to the United States, he slept on his agent’s sofa and then got a small part in a movie called Harry Potter and the Something of Something, which grossed nearly $900 million worldwide. And then he made another one, called Twilight, which grossed $385 million in theaters and almost another $200 million in U.S. DVD sales. Box-office riches, like so much of the female population of this planet, follow him from continent to continent, nursing a raging crush.
Coulter suggested I do some rewrite work on Remember Me (for the record, there is only one credited writer, Will Fetters), the first American release in which Rob will portray a mortal, nonmagical, carbon-based life form of the earthly realm—Salvador Dali, whom he played in Little Ashes, surely doesn’t qualify. As Rob scribbles away on the script’s pages, it’s clear he is starting his own revision process.
Rob’s face is constantly busy—especially his kaleidoscopic eyes, which are continually rolling and dilating, because he is always thinking. Over the course of that latte, he contemplates Jimi Hendrix, French fries, girls, art, beer, his cousin the philosopher, girls, truth, God, his dog, girls, and whether this week’s stalker has followed him from L.A. I don’t think he could turn his brain off if he wanted to.
Despite the legion of fans trailing him from hotel to hotel, laying siege to each like the Roman army, he is neither fearful nor cocky—he’s hungry, curious, forever reaching intellectually. That may not sound like a big deal, but think of the context: Complete strangers want to fuck you, shoot you, be you, buy you, sell you, run their fingers through your hair, watch you have sex, hear you pee, eat chips with you, and kidnap you and stuff you in the trunk of their car. And you? You must know more, more, more about exotic tropical diseases.

Rob and I discover we share a mutual fascination with afflictions that maim and disfigure and disgust: He brings up cancrum oris, in which bacteria eat away at your face until you get kind of a window in the side of your head and the entire world sees your teeth; I mention cyclic vomiting syndrome, a condition in which you puke literally all the goddamn time; he delights in lymphatic filariasis, where parasitic worms burrow into your lymph nodes and can make your balls swell to the size of watermelons, forcing you to tote them around in a wheelbarrow.
We come up with a blockbuster hit movie, entitled Candiru Infestation, about a tiny fish that swims up your urethra and into your urinary tract and lodges in your cock with backward-facing umbrella spikes it shoots from its spine.
„Fucking brilliant! It could be like Finding Nemo!“ says Rob. „And the little candiru is lost in the balls! Think of the soundtrack!“

BEER NO. 1
Fourteen months later we’re in London. New Moon, the second movie in the Twilight saga, has set box-office records for largest midnight opening and biggest opening-day gross. Remember Me, Rob’s young-man-in-crisis drama, has wrapped. He has 24 hours before he has to start rehearsals for Bel Ami, based on the Guy de Maupassant novel, in which he plays a bed-hopping social climber.
He is waiting to pick me up in the bar of my hotel. He has ordered himself a pint of beer and, remembering my beverage of choice, a Diet Coke for me. He has the lovely manners of the good son of a good mum.
He says he wants to take me to a particular restaurant nearby, „just a little out-of-the-way place.“ So out of the way, it turns out, that after wandering around nearly all of Covent Garden, we can’t find it. He doesn’t seem too surprised, really. Of late he’s been getting lost a lot in his own hometown. But then it’s been a couple of years since he’s actually lived here, and London is confusing as hell anyway.
Considering alternatives, we peek into a crowded cafe full of the young and beautiful, but he recoils. A few minutes later, when we come to a tiny Mexican place, his hackles go up a bit. Hmm. I ask him whether, at this point, he’s able to sniff out crazed fans lurking under the tables.
„Yes. Sure. But last time I was here, the guacamole was bad.“
Rob has made no sartorial concessions to Britain’s ugliest winter weather in 30 years. A button-down, light Carhartt-like jacket, no gloves. He does have a hat, perhaps the same one he wore in New York. I’m swaddled like the Michelin Man and I’m fucking freezing. He’s cheery, unfazed, giggling away. It occurs to me that London seems to afford him a freedom he doesn’t have in New York or Los Angeles. And a London night with deserted, snow-piled streets, after an epic storm that paralyzed Heathrow and shut down the Eurostar trains, is like an unbridled romp while going commando.
Without trying, we arrive back where we started, in front of the Covent Garden Hotel. Across the street there’s a high-end sex-toy-and-bondage shop called Coco de Mer. I mention that I popped in there earlier (before the National Gallery, thank you), and I tell him about this insane S&M body-harness contraption they have that allows you to dress up like a horse and have a long tail.
„That’s so English. I want to do this entire interview wearing it, from an equine point of view,“ he says, stomping the sidewalk with make-believe hooves. „Seriously. As an experiment in public percep¬tions. Is the place still open?“

BEER NO. 2
We’re inside, at a warm corner of the hotel’s Brasserie Max, and Rob is having another beer. We’re talking about how he copes. „When I was 17 until, I don’t know, 20, I had this massive, baseless confidence. This very clear idea of myself and how I would achieve success, which involved making decisions. I saw myself picking up the phone and saying ‘Absolutely not’ or ‘Definitely yes’. Having control. Except you have to figure out whether the way you think at 19 or 20 has any value. And eventually I understood, with all that control, which was probably illusory, I wasn’t progressing. So now I’m relinquishing a bit. I’ll be a tiny bit naked. Except tonight I won’t, because it’s fucking freezing and my balls will shrivel up.“
He may keep his balls covered in winter, but Allen Coulter says that during the shooting of Remember Me, Rob did bare himself: „It was about control, for him, in the beginning. But he wanted forward motion more than he wanted to protect himself. Really brave—especially for a young guy with a big target on his back.“
Rob does seem eager to shed some clothing, to give up the reins.
„Shall we go see about that harness? Seriously, you eventually realize you can’t make every single decision. I was always building, always protecting something. At the same time, I seemed to be losing the ability to move. I’d protected myself into checkmate. Even mentally.“
In that moment, he has a realization: „I can barely remember the last two years. Not like a haze of partying or anything like that. Just … it’s been crazy.“
There’s been surreal stuff. Like the time at a charity event in Cannes when two attendees bid nearly $60,000 combined to have Rob give their daughters a kiss on the cheek.
There’s been scary stuff, though the idea he might truly be at risk strikes him as absurd: „I find it really funny—if I got shot, I would literally be in hysterics. I would be like, ‘Are you serious? Jesus Christ, get Zac Efron! He’s got more social relevance than I do.’“
He’s pretty sure there was some good stuff, too. „There was this one time with some elephants on a golf course in Barcelona …“
He drifts into a reverie. He gets amazed easily, and at the moment he’s fixated on the mysterious green bar snacks. They’re sort of like wasabi peas, but not. They’re covered in chili powder and look like tiny tumors. He’s eating every single one.
„Fuck, these are good. What are they? I want to snort them—they’d clear up my sinuses.“

BEER NO. 3
Rob’s hunger is more than merely metaphorical. He orders two entrees—the mini beefburgers with tomato-and-onion relish and the mini chicken burgers with mango chutney—along with another pint. „I eat so much, I’m like a compulsive eater. I’ve been eating room service, and I’m always really worried about it, so I choose like six things on the menu and eat them all.“
He doesn’t want to miss anything, which implies a hint of regret. He didn’t always want to be an actor. He modeled. He’s a talented guitarist and keyboard player who has toyed with following his older sister Lizzy into pop music. But he’s a serious type, and his most serious aspirations involved political speech writing. „It’s fascinating. You’d have two or three minutes to affect someone. Make them hear you. Get the message out and maybe it will echo. I quite enjoyed doing press for the first Twilight, because there was a similarity. But after a bit I was ladling it out. If you want people to listen to you, you’d better have something to say. I felt a responsibility to be fascinating. You’re bargaining with the audience. Is this enough for them? And that affects the way you look at art.“
Art. It’s illogical to think he’s not allowed to have ideas about it merely because he has helped a lot of people make a lot of money.
„Before, I felt like I couldn’t break through anything, including myself. And now it feels a bit as though I’ve climbed along the side of my brain and am at least looking in. But I know it will take me at least another 10 years before I’m remotely satisfied with anything I do. But with acting you keep trying in the hopes you might be… great. But then I think, does wanting to be good or even great, or even just wanting to make art, cheapen the experience?“
I worry his head is going to explode. He answers questions with questions. Doors open onto more doors. This sometimes leads to trouble with scripts: Since he sees every character’s point of view, he often needs some sort of distillation. The catch is that unless the distillation somehow encompasses every character’s essence, it only causes his imagination to fire more wildly. It’s the kaleidoscope-vision thing.
Some people can have the ocean in front of them and just put their big toe in. Rob wants to swim until he drowns, and he’s going to try to drink it all up before he goes under. His striving is a source of worry because he can’t really tell anybody he wants more: „Please don’t make this about me complaining. Please. I’m the luckiest bastard on the planet.“ He worries he might be selfish. He worries maybe he’s a nonhumanist-separatist-weirdo because his most profound moments have been with his dog. And he worries about whether he can be an actor who can reach the masses and still ask for anything.
„If it exists out there—this invisible-creative-spirit-idea thing—then you’re the medium through which it travels so everybody can touch it. But… what gives you the right to be the medium? What gives you the right to claim it? And then get an agent and say I want $20 million and a fruit basket to be the medium, thank you very much.
„As an actor, you can elevate the human condition or cheapen it. I would assume it’s the same with anything you do—you try to elevate and maybe someday you will.“
An actor may indeed have the ability to raise us, but Rob uncon¬sciously starts speaking sotto voce each time he utters the word actor or any variation of it.
Rob, did you know that every time you say actor or acting you lower your voice to a whisper?
He’s genuinely startled. „I do?“
Yes, so quietly it’s like you’re saying Negro.
He laughs, lightens up. „What if we were ‘acting’ like ‘Negroes?Then we’d be fucked—we couldn’t hear anything…“

BEER NO. 4
Rob asks the waiter for another beer. He’s talking about an uncle who worked in a steel mill in the Yorkshire town his dad grew up in. Rob’s father and his other uncles moved away as soon as they were old enough, but the eldest brother stayed there his whole life.
„They’re bulldozing houses, whole streets of houses. And my dad asked him, ‘Why stay?’ He said, ‘Who’s going to look after our mom?’ And I was just thinking, Jesus fucking Christ, there might be something wrong with my emotional sight, because I’m not sure if I could make that kind of sacrifice. The only emotional connection of relevance is with my dog. My relationship with my dog, it’s ridiculous.
„I think you need to be able to break through what you think about yourself to try to make any sort of art. I used to play music all the time, and the most amazing part was the freedom that came with kicking myself in the ass, letting go, and surprising myself.“
He tried to let go a little bit with the photo shoot accompanying this interview—it wasn’t easy.
„I really hate vaginas. I’m allergic to vagina. But I can’t say I had no idea, because it was a 12-hour shoot, so you kind of get the picture that these women are going to stay naked after, like, five or six hours. But I wasn’t exactly prepared. I had no idea what to say to these girls. Thank God I was hungover.“
Is your mom going to have something to say about it?
„Oh, God.“ He puts his head in his hands, shrugs. „Well, she quite enjoyed when I got her cable.“ It’s not that Rob’s mother now spends all night watching Skinemax in her London home. „No, no! God, no! It’s just that there’s nakedness all over the place now. But this shoot, it’s kind of eighties nakedness, you know? If you look at porn in, like, the eighties, there was something kind of quaint about it, quite sweet—like this little naked community. The people who made it liked it, they had respect for it. Not remotely like the porn that’s available now. No community in it at all. It’s just everything, everywhere.“

CANDY
In the U.K., Smarties are made of chocolate and are kind of like M&M’s in weird colors like mauve and teal but somehow more delicious. Rob’s not really a dessert guy, yet he’s rapidly hoovering my last packet of Smarties. „Amazing. I’ve eaten like 5,000 of these already. See what you have to deal with?“
In Remember Me he plays a guy whose issues are eerily like his own. Tyler is a young man who has retreated into himself, but then he meets a woman, becomes conflicted, and has to choose whether to remain in lockdown or step into life and the world.
„Tyler is so aware of his actions. But he has no idea whether they’re of any value at all. Can you be a person if you live in the bubble? He’s stuck in the middle. At the same time, he’s lucky to have the choice. Conflict is innate in a lucky person.“ What attractedyou to the role?
„I’m а lucky person. Thank God. And I’m conflicted. Thank God.“
He tells me about a book he read called Eat the Rich, by P.J. O’Rourke (full disclosure: P.J. was married briefly to my sister, though Rob had no idea). He was drawn to a part that says something like: One man’s wealth does not mean another man’s poverty—and vice versa. Rob’s slightly embarrassed to voice this idea.
He is unsure whether to feel guilty, to bask in it all, or both. Thing is, there aren’t any rules for a life as extraordinary as his is right now.
He tells me an elephant story. Not the one about Barcelona elephants—one about some he’d met recently in California.
„Did you know elephants purr? It’s completely scary if you don’t know what it is. They purr like cats, but their heads are so deep they sound like velociraptors. You feel it in the ground under your feet.
„So this big female started sniffing my foot—big female elephant, that is. She sniffed it so hard it came up off the pavement like her trunk was a vacuum cleaner. Then she took my entire body in her mouth. I was holding on to her head, and as I slowly let go she tightened her grip really carefully until I’m just upside down in her mouth and she’s going through my pockets with her trunk, looking for peppermints. It was the best day of my life.“
So you gave up control to an elephant, got groped, mugged, hadyour candy tugged at—and it was glorious?
„Yeah. So beautiful you can’t imagine. And the baby elephant was so excited that it sprinted out and did its routine in five seconds and then curtsied to everybody. It was actually laughing. Brilliant. Did you know they can also do imitations of other animals? A horse, a chicken, a monkey—these elephants could, anyway. They were movie elephants. One had written a screenplay, and one really wants to direct.“
He laughs. He was in Los Angeles, in discussions to star with Sean Penn in Water for Elephants, an adaptation of Sara Gruen’s novel. The elephants are actors like him, and he wonders if he might, on some cosmic level, be a bit like them.
„Do you know how they die? The elephant guy told me their molars get ground down from eating wood but regenerate like six times. And after that they slowly starve to death. Which is poignant, but that must also be what gives them time to get to the elephant graveyard. They’re incredibly designed creatures.
„I mean, people hang on way too fucking long. If I knew that when my teeth fell out, that was it… Wow.
„The best day of my life. Beautiful, beautiful day.“
A few moments later, Rob announces he’s going to get a cab home and excuses himself.
Can I walk you? I don’t like you going out there all by yourself!
„I’ll be okay.“

i woke up today to a text message telling me that muse has release 3 new b-sides that i can listen to on muse.mu. score. scroll through the e-mails on my blackberry and see that theres new pictures of rob on the set of bel ami from twifans. score. would check those out later. read an apology message from my bf for a semi-fight we had list night with an offer to help me solve the problem. score. finish up reading and deleting email. climb out of my bed to get on my computer. open gmail and go through the same routine. check google buzz and see pete cashmore's face starring back at me on the stream. score. debate whether or not i should wait til work to check out rob. click on the twifans link. wait for it to load. say outloud, really loud, "OH...HOT!" score score score. look around semi-embarrased, but glad no one else was there to witness that. score. i was telling someone recently that i think rob should start doing more "normal" movies, but after seeing these pictures, i don't think i would mind another period piece or two. yum.

get out of the shower and my good friend tells me that he told his gf he loves her for the first time last night and she teared up. awww...new love is the best. lets hope this good day continues because there is much to celebrate tonight. sorry for my ranting today. but it's been a good day.
